I would personally argue that calculus is the most feared area of mathematics that people actually take. I could almost argue for differential equations, but that is part of calculus and almost no one has to take it. Calculus, however, is very important to many areas of artificial intelligence, especially machine learning. You still have to be able to take a derivative. As such, this is a core area of mathematics that needs to be understood to have a good handle on the complexities of AI.
